Couldn't agree more. I don't know if I would go so far as to propose the abolition of the written exams but I could be persuaded ...
Certainly, the great majority of the questions seem to have little or no practical application, and one has the sense that they are not written to actually probe your knowledge but just to see whether you can memorize trivia.
