One of the problems with the roads around Lake Eyre is that the soil (what there is of it) has a very high clay content so it doesn't take much rain to become very sticky indeed. It is also why a lot of the roads are closed after what can be only lightish rainfalls.
Similarly, it is why a lot of the airstrips including Prominent Hill get closed after only the briefest rain shower. The strips are usually still ok but the Fokker 50s on Prominent Hill can transport the clay back to Adelaide and deposit it on the runway there much to the disgust of other users. Dirty Fokkers.
