This is why folk get into strife; it's not fine. Some roads are open, many are closed. The fines for driving on a closed road vary but SA fines are rumoured to be $1000/wheel, this includes the spares and steering wheel.

Having driven the Birdsville track in June 2008 the afternoon it opened after only 83 mm of rain, it took us 4 hours to cover 140 km. A year later, when dry, half that time.

The RACQ road condition web site is a good source.

With more rain forecast/possible in western QLD with cyclone Ului, I'd be surprised if the Birdville & Strzelecki tracks don't go out again.
