Could anyone out there confirm or deny whether the United States still own the runway at Woodbridge. I can remember being told in the 90s that woodbridge could be used to land the space shuttle should there be a problem with it, and that was the reason that it was fenced off?

Negative, as I mentioned in my post above it is no longer active. It is owned by the MoD. The runway is in great condition (I drove down it twice last year!), however the shrubs and trees are too tall for most things to land there. It is used regularly byt the army for Apache exercise though.
I seem to recall that the divert field for the shuttle was in Spain? Could be wrong though.
As far as I am aware there is nowhere in the UK now that is any designated divert field for the Shuttle.
