Same thing happened to us in Santa Barbara. Landed in the evening, left the airport to get a burger, came back (about 10pm now) and it was all locked up. Had to call the airport police on my mobile, they drove over and wanted to see our licences ID's etc. Heaven knows what would have happened had we left them in the A/C.....but luckily for us they were friendly and unlocked the gate for us....
