Your theory does not explain the pattern of failure on the mounting points for the vertical stabilizer.
The tail or a portion of it encountering the water and literally prying the tail cone upwards lifting the VS off the tail assembly and breaking the mounts fits the pattern of damage somewhat better. It seems others, like
infrequentflyer789, have the same idea.
