Yes, it is very important to have good knowledge about Jet Engines and Aerodynamics or as some would prefer to call it Principles of Flight.
The Jeppesen JAA ATPL books are very good for the above subjects. The topics are explained very well. They are very lengthy though. For the Q banks also there are some JAA Q banks available. Try and get those they are very good.
