Adblock Plus is good, it generally does not stop anything you do want to see. If you do then you can go to the adblock plus preferences and then you can "unfilter" (is that a word) the ads you actually want so you have control.
Script block, however, can be a pain until you're used to it.
The above is for Firefox. If you are using IE8 then it gets more complicated but you can still block the ads quite easily by using the "private browsing" thingie and downloading the "block" list (I tried it and it worked). From your screenshot it would seem to me that you are using IE7/8 so maybe it's time to change to the Fox as it not only has better tools for ads but also runs faster (i.e. uses less resources on your PC) and, above all, ain't Microsoft!!
For the rare things you do, like banking, which do not agree with Fox then you can use IE for these things.

PS. Your problem with these ads is NOTHING to do with your provider. They just give you a gateway to wwwunderfulweb and no more. The same would happen no matter who your ISP was
