German federation: ticket sales for World Cup in South Africa slow so far
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 4 hours ago
FRANKFURT, Germany — The German football federation says ticket sales for the World Cup in South Africa are slow so far, with travel costs among the concerns.
The federation said Tuesday that 1,916 tickets have been sold to German fans for the group matches against Australia, Serbia and Ghana.
Federation president Theo Zwanziger said a number of factors were behind the poor sales, and that "hotel prices certainly play a role too." Security has frequently also been cited as a concern.
Zwanziger said that "we must use the months until the World Cup to build up confidence."
Federation general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach said the sales were "normal" compared to the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea, also an expensive long-haul trip for Germans.
