UAE Safe?

It often amuses me when people say the UAE is "safe". That is a matter of opinion and perspective. Many would beg to differ.

Sure you are unlikely to get killed in a drive by shooting, stabbed in the street, robbed at gunpoint in your home.

However a car accident that is not your fault could land you in jail. As could a legal prescription obtained overseas. The banks could have you in jail with a administrative error. A contractual agreement can be ignored costing thousands. Any number of idiot drivers could kill or maim your family. Raping by a local might land a girl in jail for illegal sex. As could an affair out of marriage. Date rape is common. Botched medical procedures have damaged hundreds. A number in EK. A hiccup with a visa can throw someone in the slammer even if the employer is at fault. Professionally you could be a convenient scapegoat when some other idiot is saving face.

Every day there are stories in the papers of gross injustices to everyday people while serious crimes by influentials are ridiculously excused or swept under a magic carpet.

The difference is that in a civilised country the law is on your side and reasonable protections and precautions will avoid most nasties. No so here. The system will lock you up at the drop of a hat without trial and no amount of diplomatic pressure can help. Trouble can find you in many ways.

The state can rob and plunder, rape and pillage and there is not a thing anyone can do. It happens daily and picking up any paper will show this.

Don't think the UAE is "safe". There are many who would argue against that statement.
