As they did in the days before Google, Facebook, MySpace etc (God, I'm starting to sound like BEags!). The example we were given was from a simple wedding announcement in the Daily Torygraph. The DS managed to nail down addresses of family and friends (best man), work places, photographs (in uniform from local press showing wings [and all the sword party with wings/brevet]) just through using resources in the local public library (notably the phone book!). In under an hour!
