I still remember with pleasure the feast of the passover on New Year's eve 1965 when the staish, as was the system in those days, read out the promo list on the stroke of midnight.
There followed a short period while someone was despatched to bring the lucky man to the ball room. He arrived in wolly dressing gown, issue blue/white stripped wyncette PJs, and carpet slippers to be told he was promoted. And of course his posting followed the following day.
How soft we have got with extended time off for both Christmas AND New Year. In those days NY was a working day and any Jocks had to take leave
for Hogmanay.
