Hope the folks round wittering don't mind the noise
The folks around Wittering have no choice as we only rent the land for a peppercorn rent; it was about £1.5K per annum (yes £1500) in 1991 and I doubt it has increased. If we wish to 'get rid' we have to return the land to the state it was in when we were leased it in the 30s by the Duke! The cost of that would be prohibitive.
Believe me, it's true. I was in MOD Adastral in '91 when we (not me, I was in Fg Trg at the time) had a thought to move the Jag/Har force from Colt/Witt into Woodbridge/Bentwaters. There were more arguments against than for, not least was the fact that the ex-USAF bases were on 110 volts but the cost of returning Wittering to arable land was number 1 on the reasons of why not!
