Don't underestimate the dangers of distraction in a flying environment. You have to stay ahead and be on top of the aeroplane with your attention on what is happening, not other problems.
You make a good case for an option Queeg doesn't appear to have considered, namely giving
himself an extended break in a comfy seat in 1st class and allowing the two FO's to complete the flight to ORD, sans the disruption of a diversion to MIA.
