About safer planes of today : What make safer the plane is not only the FBW system ... it's also better general design and certainly huge progresses in the engines design and their better reliability. I wonder what is the quantified part of the FBW in this game ? FBW play certainly a huge part for a better and economical exploitation of the liners iinstead be a major player in the security aera. A 737-200 FBW will be safest than a standard one ?
