If you have got time on your hands, and you are not pressurised on recency, then you can self study. Forget about all the books, and syllabus, they are too broad. Get all notes you can from your friends who passed-full notes with question banks for the composite and regulations, see if can figure it out on your own.
If you want to pass in the first shot itself, or for a higher chance of passing , then you should go to a good teacher. People have recommended various good instructors on this thread. Please go through it, as opinions are different.
