Don't forget that (finally) it is possible to convert your licence to a JAA one. Takes some exams (law at least, can't remember what else if any) and a flight test. This is better than when I tried, and they told me "it is allowed under JARs, but the requirements have not yet been written. Sorry!"
(hence I never had a UK PPL, waited for my CPL).
