That would have been due to an OEM version of Nero.
Old versions were tied to the OEM hardware they were sold with so a Sony copy would only work with Sony drives, an LG version only with LG etc.
ImgBurn tends to be a happy soul that doesn't have problems interacting with any other software
The newest version has a lot of nice features too. Well worth donating for it.
