QJB, Great questions!

You're reasoning on the first question sounds correct as it is a pressure differential over the main metering jet and not absolute pressure that draws fuel. As for the second question, any one cycle of the engine incurs energy loss due to friction as volumetric efficiency is increased more fuel can be burnt and therefore more energy can be produced per cycle thereby reducing the overall friction energy loss and fuel burn.
