Hi Mopar,
Adding onto what others have mentioned. South Lantau has a wave. Cheung Sha being popular and Pui O beach the pick during some typhoon swell, in fact there is swell today. I know guys surfing off Tap Mun, an island north of Tai Long Wan. Stand up paddle is picking up on Lantau as well.
Hainan is supposed to have waves and with direct flights to Bali you'll have plenty of time to surf when you're an SO.
In my opinion you need to have an interest outside of work, all the guys and girls who do seem to be the happiest.
Don't stop surfing during the training or after it. It's not that difficult!
There are waves here but you need to get out and chase them.
