Outport Security
We have recently received a report from a member about a very serious security incident in JNB, in mid July. The basic detail of the incident is that a number of crew, travelling in a hotel shuttle bus, were the victims of a serious attempted robbery. The bus was stopped by a group of men masquerading as police, under the pretence of searching the bus for counterfeit money. These men then attempted to steal passports, money and hotel room keys from the occupants of the bus. Fortunately none of the crew involved was hurt in the incident.
Given the seriousness of this incident, and the fact that firearms could so easily have been involved, we find it difficult to understand that there has been no mention of the incident by our security department; nor has there been any mention of it in the confidential security folder at dispatch.
The security department have described the incident as “very unfortunate”, but their advice is simply: “Crew should exercise extreme caution at all times when at outports, not just JNB.” That’s reassuring to know.
