Belfast escapes airline pay cuts

Aer Lingus is seeking pay cuts from its workforce after reporting an operating loss of 93m euros for the first six months of the year.
However, the move is unlikely to affect the airline's employees in Belfast where, the company said, its operation was "working extremely well".
Earlier this week Aer Lingus said it was working on a restructuring plan to return the company to profitability.
A spokesman said the Belfast operation was competitive and profitable.
Aer Lingus corporate affairs director Enda Corneille said: "Our base in Belfast is working extremely well and if anything, we would like the rest of our operation in the Republic to emulate the type of flexibilities we have in Belfast rather than it being a particular target for any planned resizing of the business.
"The reason for this is that our operation and cost base in Belfast are closely aligned to our nearest competitor which means we can be more competitive on price and still be profitable as we showed in June July and August of this year.
"The issue for us in the Republic is that our costs are out of line with our closest competitors."
