Howdy,
I did work experience with an aircraft maintenance company at Parafield. They seemed more than happy to have me. Once they realise you aren’t a drongo they’ll normally get you to do some interesting stuff. I went out on plenty of engine run-ups in chieftains etc. I also went up on a couple of autopilot flight tests… Totally in accordance with
CAR 249 of course.
I was there "for the purpose of flight observation."
