Capt. THORSTEINN "TONY" ELTON JONSSON D.F.M. Passed away in Reykjavik Hospital in the morning of the 30th.December.
Tony was born in Reykjavik on October 19th 1921, where he spent his childhood. He left Iceland at the age of 19 to join the Royal Air Force where he was trained to become a fighter pilot and was one of the few to receive the Distinguished Flying Medal from Geoge VI King of England. After the war Tony joined Icelandair and flew as Captain for over 20 years where his work took him to Greenland, a land he loved. Tony flew for other airlines such as SABENA and Transavia. During the civil war in Nigeria, he flew for a charity organization named "AID BY AIR", flying relief missions for the starving population of Biafra. After the war he moved to Luxembourg where he flew as a Captain from the beginning of Cargolux Airlines for 16 years until his retirement in 1986. Tony was a true leader as a professional pilot and a keen sportsman, he was elected as President for Icelandic Pilot Association as well as the Luxembourg Pilot Association. Tony was a gifted writer and painter and pursued his art to his last days.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Protestant Church, 5 rue de la Congregation in Luxembourg on Saturday, January 12th, 2002, at 14:00.
