Just to put your mind at rest, I think you'll find that the inane comments and 'should have gone somewhere else' suggestions were from spotters / amateurs / enthusiasts / passengers.
Most is not all commercial pilots would treat smoke and/or fumes in the cabin or flightdeck as a serious emergency requiring immediate diversion to the nearest suitable runway, and would be given every assistance by ATC. Which is exactly what happened.
