I don't understand why I should use the BT outgoing server details as I also have a Gmail account.
As Mike says, if you normally use Gmail to send email, you should continue. Perhaps the insntructions would have been clearer if they referred to "your current outgoing email service" rather than specifically your ISP.
As you're already using Google, are you aware that Google supports IMAP?
