You could run the memory advisor tool available on
RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com and often on other memory manufacturer/supplier sites.
This will tell you what you have and what can be installed - it might let you know if your motherboard can support the DDR400
