A 22-year-old South African diver, sentenced to three months in jail in the United Arab Emirates for allegedly having extramarital sex with her boss, has lost her appeal against the court's ruling. Roxanne Hillier’s 41-year-old employer is now a free man after serving a month of his six-month-long sentence which was reduced by five months. The two were arrested after a night dive on May 16, when police raided their place of employment. Two weeks later, both were found guilty of extramarital sex and being alone together in a room. Freddie Hillier says he is shocked by the fact that his daughter’s appeal has failed, while her employer is now a free man.
“I can’t even begin to imagine how they were convicted without proof in the first place.” Hillier’s father is convinced that his daughter is being held because she was earlier forced to sign a statement admitting her guilt. He believes UAE authorities want to use her as an example to show the rest of the world that they will prosecute people caught having extramarital sex. According to him, the senior South African diplomat who attended the case has been very helpful, and has said that he will investigate the matter.
