Sorry, didn't pay that close attention to your whole posts.
I suspect the two of them feeling all of the above.
They may even be feeling each other for a while until the Mrs. decides to bring the next toy boy over for a fortnight.
But exactly just how does this patheric scenario make "us" look foolish/stupid/confused/stunned/helpless?
If what you say is true, the two of them just became the laughingstocks of every happy hour around the gulf.
