Like it or not computers are progress and likely inescapable. Ask the B-2 or F-117A pilot who rely upon them even more
The difference is that the FBW software in the above isnt trying to "protect" the airplane from the pilot. I think that one inescapable question in this incident is what role the complexity of the software contributed to the end result. In some ways this reminds me of the conflict between the original astronauts and the NASA. My humble opinion is when in doubt you need better pilots, not more complicated software. When it all goes south the guys in the pointy end still need "the right stuff"...not the "right OS"
