It may have been for free, at the same time SAA are doing ACMI leases on 747-400s for TAAG on the Luanda-Lisbon route at a very good rate and have had their frequencies on the Joburg-Luanda route (the most profitable in their network) incerased significantly. So it seems like a case of what goes around comes around!
