Exactly the same thing happens in IOM, although the day stop is about 5 hours, and has been going on for about 4 years. I suspect it's simply cheaper to park here (and in JER) between the peaks than at their usual bases or LCY.
Whether it goes on once the integration is done remains to be seen.
