Hate to put a spoiler on this but - whether we like it or not - the law is the law, irrespective of the moral perspective Westerners have.
We expect citizens/visitors/ex-pats to obey our laws (MPs excluded) so it goes both ways.
I'm no prude, couldn't condone actions of either party but feel for the kids.
