Going back to Background Noise's problem. You're not using iAnti-Virus are you BN? Sometimes something similar happens to my machine and I find that if I go into Activity Monitor and stop the IAVD process, my macbook returns to normal and the anti-virus resets itself.
If you're not using Ianti-virus - God knows!
