And most important of all, to know WHEN you know nothing.
In my first task as an engineer, I was faced with something I didn't know how to do, so did the standard university exam approach of taking my best guess. (Because a university education is such a good preparation for the real world ...) and, of course, was horribly wrong.
It was then kindly, but nonetheless precisely, pointed out to me that if I, as a professional engineer, guessed when I didn't know I was, in effect, gambling with other peoples' lives.
Never, ever be afraid to ask - and be very, very, afraid of those who never ask.
