If it had been an FAAlicense, then yes he can go straight to the 550... phew, luckily the CAA/JAA know better..

Seriously, have you actually checked the JAA regs regarding this.. theres a list of typeratings somewhere that table the applicable ratings with model priviledges.
I would'nt trust what some slightly dis-interested phone person tells me..
