on the map the Edwards is not far from Palmdale, is it worth driving a bit further or are the chances of seeing something interesting are remote?
If you do see anything it will definitely be "remote". You won't be allowed anywhere near the base, except on the annual open day in October.
There are two museums in San Diego - USS Midway at the waterfront ('natch) and one in Balboa Park.
