Hercs at Low Level
Many years ago the Hercs practised what was called JATFor which involved 35 aircraft at low level and 30 seconds separation aimed at getting a complete Parachute Battalion onto a DZ along with its vehicles (LRovers and Trlrs) and equipment all within a very short time span.
Being such a large formation full exercises were always on a weekend and the stream was always preceded by a weather aircraft about 30 minutes in front.
During one such exercise the phone rang in Ops. All the regular staff were busy so the Staish (Freddie Yetman at the time) picked up the phone to hear some wingeing low flying complaint about an aircraft flying low over the house. He listened to the whole sorry tale, worked out the when and where and replied "Just hang around mate - there's another 35 behind it." and put the phone down.
