In a very dynamic situation at speeds in the order of 160 KIAS, it's simply not possible to look outside and accurately determine whether planned acceleration is matched by actual.
We aren't talking here about 160 knots. The decision has to be made well before that, probably not more than 100 knots. In any case, it has to be before V1 and in time to abort before V1 and stop safely in the remaining runway. On fields without
Distance Remaining boards, or where you can't see them, it has to be determined by time. If you don't want to do it, fine, just keep on they way this crew did. They (and their passengers) are still alive, just out of a job.
