Built for the Guggenheim Safe Aircraft Competition 1929 by James McDonnell and therefore the start of one of the branches of the Boeing ancestry tree, although McDonnell would not have another design under his name until the XP-67 of 1944. But then followed the Phantom, Banshee, Demon, Voodoo, F-5 Phantom, and the rest is history.
