ROUTE -
Depending on the winds, the 'feet-wet' route that KAL-007 was supposed to fly wiil normally keep you clear of Russian Airspace. However, if an inland rout is flown, there may not be fuel availability to re-file another route.
It is strange that they didn't divert to Anchorage & refuel, though.
