Have you tried starting Messenger and clicking on tools, then options then click on preferences. Remove the tick from the first two boxes...

' run this program when windows starts '

and

' allow this program to run in the background '

this way hopefully messenger won't start but enough of it will stay on your drive (about 4MB) to keep update quiet.

I haven't tried it myself cos I do use messenger.
