Actually to be fair they could. A direct route from the motorway or a direct link to a main line railway that ran regularly and it would be amazing what could be achieved. A simple extension to the runway the installation of Cat 2 and 3 ( yes yes I know about the terrain) and bobs your uncle you could have a genuine transatlantic airport.
Cardiff is about 2 hours from the outskirts of London it is on the Atlantic routes so why the heck hasn't somebody grabbed bull by horns and done something about it, it would need new terminal buildings well a total overhaul but I have been surprised over the years that no one has ever done anything to move that idea forward.
Before anyone pops up and says people if you provide the flights and the means to get to them people will fly. I travel to Heathrow Gatwick etc to catch flights and trust me I don't want to go there so if somewhere was easily accessible and you gave them the flights at the right price people will come.
But as ever with Cardiff it is a pipe dream
