Directory Metadata

I was wondering if anyone can help me.

I have an external hard drive filled with movies. When I connect the hard drive to my media player (WD HD TV) it shows a mass of identical icons with the directory name underneath (197).
So when I browse the hard drive looking to find a movie it is a wall of the same icon with different names underneath.
What I want to do is link the directory for each movie to an image, i.e. a small image of the movie poster, so it is easier to browse through the collection.

I've talked to technical support and apparently all I have to do is attach the image to the directory by modifying it's metadata. That, I'm sure, is a completely accurate and correct answer, unfortunately I have no idea how to do this.

I looked online for a metadata editor and the licence is $149. I'm not paying that and decided that the genius of pprune may well provide an explanation of how to do it and if required recommend some free software to help do the job!

Thanks in advance.

JM.
