Is it safe? Yes. Why wouldn't it be? It's not that difficult, really... Did it in Widerĝe without any problems. Same as flying the 737CL/NG mixed, really. Same stuff - different wrapping!
...and NG is really just New Gear. All-in-all a pretty half-baked design, because of the commonality requirements with the 100/200/300
