...i never used them (VNCs) due to no coverage in my area.
My school (and tester) REQUESTED I not use the VNC, to ensure that I COULD navigate & handle the other stuff just using ERC, WAC & VTC. Seemed reasonable to me and had no great difficulties with it. Didn't have GPS either.
Get over it.
