on my home theatre (Philips) the HDMI cable needs to be supplemented by a separate audio cable. This is also the case for connecting the blueray equipped laptop to the TV (Philips as well). Check your TV manual, my one explicitely mentions this.
found out after searching for bad connection, broken cable etc...
