Thumbs down Fictitious Kidnappings

Here's an article from a Nigerian newspaper with details of a recent kidnapping, as a result of which a 10 year old boy was strangled :

Kidnappers Strangle 10-Year-Old Boy After Collecting Ransom

Imo State Police command yesterday paraded three suspected kidnappers who strangulated their victim, a 10-year-old boy, to death even after collecting ransom from his parents.

Also paraded were seven armed robbery suspects arrested by the command from different parts of the state.

The suspected kidnappers, Ugonna Lambert, Kingsley Edoziem and Ogonna Onye, are from Iho in Ikeduru Local Government Area. According to the police, they penultimate Sunday, allegedly lured master Emmanuel Eric Junior, a native of Akata in Ideato North LGA, from a church service in Port Harcourt and abducted him, and they took him down to Ikeduru where they strangulated him and buried his body in a pit a few days later.

The command's Public Relations Officer, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu who gave detailed account of the incident while parading the suspects, said the kingpin of the syndicate, Ugonna Lambert, was a close friend of Emmanuel Eric family and took advantage of the relationship to organize for the kidnap of his son, Emmanuel Eric Jnr. According to him, when they brought the boy to Iho, they telephoned his father and demanded for N10 million ransom for his release.

They were able to reach a compromise a few days later and the man paid huge sum waiting for his son to be released to him. Rather than releasing the boy, Ugonna told his colleagues that Emmanuel had identified him and might reveal his identity to his father. There they agreed to go to a native doctor to prepare a charm that would make Emmanuel confused so that he would not recollect the faces of his captors. Somewhere along the road to the native doctor's place, Kinsley suggested that the best thing was to kill the victim as the charm of the native doctor might fail.

They now took him down to a burrow pit in Ikeduru and strangulated him after which they buried his corpse there. Nwaiwu further disclosed that the corpse of the victim had been recovered and deposited at Federal Medical Centre mortuary while the command is presently conducting a discreet investigation to ascertain if the arrested suspects had been involved in other kidnapping, in the past.

He also said that the command was waging a relentless war on kidnapping and warned those planning to get involved in the crime to repent or wait for police offensive. Meanwhile, two of the suspects, Ugonna Lambert and Kinsley Edoziem, who spoke to Daily Champion corroborated police account but traded allegation among themselves on who initiated the idea of strangulating the victim. The third accused, Ogonna, however, denied involvement in the crime.

Narrating how they killed the innocent boy, Ugonna and Kinsley said that they first took him to Ubomiri after abducting him from a church service in Port Harcourt from where they made phone calls to his father for payment of ransom. According to them, Mr. Emmanuel brought the sum of N60, 000 ransom and kept it at Nwaoriebi Headquarters of Mbaitolu LGA as directed. They wanted to take him to a native doctor but there was fear that the native doctor might be fake one.

When they finally agreed to take the life of the victim, they took him to a bush in Ikeduru near a burrow pit and one of them strangulated him to death with hand.

Thereafter they threw his body in the pit and proceeded to a native doctor to prepare a charm that will make the parents of the boy not detect them as abductors and kidnappers of their son. They spoke as Mr. Emmanuel Eric, father of the victim, and his relatives were shading tears at the command premises.
