Certainly some of this story is true, namely Kiev, helicopter and crewman.
When the SK SAR first arrived many crew were drawn from the Nimrod force. One ex-kipper wet man, John M 201-7, was lucky.
Now the mighty hunter was allowed to make 3 passes of Soviet vessel which at 200 kts is not long. Shortly after the Kieve transit JM poped in with some photos. They had done the standard 3 passes in an SK and taken all day about it
Don't know how close they went as the rule as a quarter mile minimum.
