Sockets on rear of puters?

Bro next door has decided to enter the 21 century and get webbed up,so a box is delivered containing broadband modem PSU and various cables, not a prob, connected a few peoples broad band modems up over the years.
Open box, tiny wee moden power supply examine same only connection option on the modem is ethernet, one I did for neigbours a while back had the option of USB or ethernet, trouble is Bro's puter, HP Pavilion 7946 inherited from Nephew does not appear to have a Ethernet socket on the back,it has a couple of USB sockets it has normal internal PCI modem sockets marked Line and Phone, and another same type of plug as the modem type,ie exactly the same as the one's marked phone and line,it has no legend above it only a funny symbol, anybody any idea what this socket is,ie be it firewire or summat of that ilk?
Bro is going to try and change the modem they sent for a one with the USB option.
